United Press International reports the snowline in the United States has retreated toward the Canadian border as spring approaches. The nation saw a low of 5 degrees below freezing at Montpelier, with damp or rainy conditions confined to the upper Great Lakes, the Northwest, and the southern plains.

In Columbus three youths reportedly stole two diamond rings from a waitress and discarded them from a moving car. they were released to parents pending investigation.
Sergio Chavez, 17, told police he asked a passerby for a cigarette when the man drew a pistol and shot him three times. Chavez was listed in serious condition today in Mexico City.
Actress Mia Farrow, who postponed filming on Secret Company with Elizabeth Taylor, is reported ready to work after a case of jitters. A World Film Services spokesman said she may not report until Friday or Monday. Farrow, estranged wife of Frank Sinatra, had not been on set since a Saturday party hosted by Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton.
Defense estimates project that over half of the 1969 draft pool may be college graduates. With more than 225000 potential graduates ineligible for deferments, induction could reach about 150000 among a 241000 total draftees, raising graduate participation from 5 to 60 percent.
The Pittsburgh Press prints a wanted ad from Robinson Township police seeking a complete ten man department with state police academy and FBI training plus Red Cross courses. The ad appears after commissioners rejected a $100 monthly raise and offered $25 instead.

Hollywood actors sign a Daily Variety ad endorsing Senator Robert Kennedy for the Democratic presidential nomination. About 60 signatories including Eddie Fisher Natalie Wood Trini Lopez Sammy Davis Doug McClure Tony Curtis Peter Lawford and others. Frank Sinatra did not sign despite past support for Kennedy.
Yuri Gagarin the first spaceman and a national hero died when a training plane crashed near Zvezdny Gorodok after an attempted engine restart. Col. Vladimir Seregin also perished. Moscow planned a Red Square funeral as mourners filled the streets.
A representative of the New York Central Railroad will visit Norwalk on Friday to inspect crossings with City Service Director Morley Price. Last year the city protested the condition of the crossings and poor maintenance of walks. Barbara Jean Hunter Miss Huron County 1966 competes for Miss Ohio in the Miss Firelands pageant by Norwalk Jaycees. The event is May 25 at Norwalk High School Auditorium. Hunter, daughter of Harold and ____ Hunter of Bellevue, is a 1966 Bellevue High graduate and Ohio Wesleyan sophomore majoring in English. She performs a piano skit and was active in cheerleading, National Honor Society and Glee Club. She previously failed to place at Cedar Point state pageant. Sharon Phillian of Delaware held Miss Ohio 1966.
Norwalk councilmen prepare to study city finances and consider hiring a consultant on a proposed income tax. Councilman Allen Hakes plans a Tuesday night meeting with all members to review options including a blue ribbon study, consulting firms, or CPAs. No tax rate or collection method has been set, and talks cover possible consultants from other cities.
Flames swept the 37 story Equitable Life building in midtown Atlanta, burning debris showering three adjacent structures including the Dinkler Plaza Hotel. No injuries reported as fire crews fought the blaze for over two hours with help from city and suburban units.
An infant and a 16 year old suffered burns in separate Wednesday accidents at their homes. One year old Terry Hunter of 167 Whittlesey Ave. is listed in fairly good condition at Fisher-Titus Hospital with burns to the leg and stomach. The other, Ronald Schneiter, a New London High School student, sustained burns when a furnace blew up at his brother’s Townline Road residence and is listed in fairly good condition at Fisher-Titus Hospital.
