New London Wildcats eye 1978 track season with mix of veterans and freshmen
New London enters 1978 track season cautious yet optimistic as coachs Bob Knoll and John McGowan rely on veterans like Mike Nestor Jim Sullivan and senior Jim Farnsworth while counting on freshmen such as David Ruggles Jeff Davis Todd Wyckoff and Si McCohn. Uncertainty surrounds several returnees including 880 relay members Paul Jackson and Mike Detterman with Jackson juggling baseball and track duties and Detterman possibly not returning. The Wildcats open on Saturday at Ashland and will compete in a slate that includes Mapleton Black River Edison Vermilion and others as they aim for a Firelands Conference title and a strong district showing.
