Fire damages Shirley's Star Diner in basement blaze

A basement fire at Shirley's Star Diner caused about 4000 dollars in damage late Friday. Eleven firefighters confined the blaze to the basement but smoke affected the upstairs. Butane tanks ruptured, Styrofoam cups and other stored items could have worsened the fire. Diner owner Shirley Wilcox said her husband and daughter found the fire as they arrived to open. Police noted a van radio theft nearby and a cracked windshield at the Norwalk Bowling Center. The fire was not considered suspicious and reopening may take two to three weeks.
