The St Alphonsus School Board announced after an 8 p.m. Mass that the school will close this June as the nuns leave for social work. About 60 students may transfer to St Marys Norwalk or attend Monroeville public schools.
London reports say 25 police officers separated about 300 girls at Paul McCartney and Linda Eastman wedding. Twelve hours later George Harrison and Pattie were jailed on marijuana charges. The events reflect a chaotic day for the Beatles.
Apollo 9 astronauts James A. McDivitt David R. Scott and Russell L. Schweickart landed 180 miles east of the Bahamas after a 10 day mission. The crew reported systems in good shape as rescue helicopters approached. Houston mission control celebrated a third straight successful flight.
An undisclosed settlement ends a six year old damage suit brought by Mr and Mrs Thomas Diamond of Rydal for their son Thomas born without arms. Defendants Richardson Merrell Inc and William S Merrell Co distributed thalidomide in the United States.

The U S Coast Guard said a Soviet bloc fishing trawler with about 20 crew was sunk by a Panamanian registered tanker Esso Honduras 31 miles offshore from Oregon Inlet North Carolina around 4 a m The tanker reported the collision as it headed south to Aruba and all hands were lost per Coast Guard statements.
Berlin-Milan Board of Education rejected Leo Ryan's appeal to enroll his five children in Milan schools while they live in Norwalk after a fire. Superintendent Lindecamp stated residence is where a student sleeps, so attending Berlin-Milan while living outside the district is not permitted. Edison High School juniors demonstrated in protest, and Ryan plans to enroll in Norwalk City Schools.
