Norwalk mayor pay and union issues raised at meeting
Norwalk Finance Director Vernis George told the Charter Review Commission that the mayor's salary is too low compared with Oberlin and urged charter changes. He noted state law, not the charter, governs salaries and insurance costs and warned against mayoral raises while in office. George also urged annual independent audits as city finances grow to a $3 million operation and discussed civil service adjustments for police and fire chiefs, while cautioning about upcoming public employee unionization moves in the Ohio legislature. Mayor Wayne Goodsite echoed concerns about unionization trends.
