City to Block Washington Street Section for Safety

The city plans to block the east end of Washington Street within months to relieve a hazardous traffic area. A petition with 86 signatures was presented to City Council, citing 100 plus school children crossing the junction of Washington Cline and East League Streets daily. Mayor Harold Finch said Marshall Street extension may allow the block, with Morley Price negotiating price with the owner.

High Court Denies Boggs Appeal in Wife Murder Case

Ohio Supreme Court refused to hear Kenneth Boggs appeal from Norwalk convict for stabbing his wife Virginia in 1961. Boggs argued the three judge court did not order a sanity hearing and claimed narcotic influence on his confession. He was later sent to Lima State Hospital for psychiatric treatment.

Finch urges water plant expansion and reservoir plan

Mayor Harold Finch urged expansion of the city water facilities including a 420000 gallon reservoir with a new dam and pipes. Estimated total cost nears 442000 for dam and pipes 50000 for land and 175000 for filtration plant expansion. Daily use reaches 150 million gallons with 100 million pumped at night. Plans also call for a November fire levy renewal and City Hall additions bids due April 1.

Talks Will Resume at Pioneer Rubber Co After Stoppage

Prospects for ending the six week old strike at Pioneer Rubber Co in Willard look brighter as mass picketing ended after a union meeting with the Willard Ministerial Association. Labor and management talks are set to resume Friday with federal mediator Harry E. Weber stating negotiations will open at 9:30 a.m. Pioneer officials are to be present following a clergy talk to the union Tuesday afternoon.

Hawk Found Guilty in Wife Stabbing Case in Ohio

Dennis Hawk, 29, of Cleveland, found guilty of stabbing his wife and sentenced to one to 20 years in the Ohio State Penitentiary. Trial began in Huron County Common Pleas Court with Judges Vetter Kear and Tudor presiding. Hawk claimed his wife stabbed herself in Bellevue while babysitting.

Arrington Named Assistant to Norwalk Chamber President

Del A. Arrington, retired Columbia Gas Co. executive, was named assistant to the president of the Norwalk Chamber of Commerce. He will coordinate committee activities and join Ralph Bache in planning chamber operations. Arrington, who retired Oct. 1 after 41 years with Columbia Gas, will help with meetings and civic work in Norwalk.

Monroeville Officials Question Fire Dept Addition Bid

Mayor may seek fire chief Schneider’s resignation over a no bid addition to the fire department building. A $1,700 bill prompted bids rule questions after contractor Knob Hill Construction said costs would exceed 1000 dollars. Council to require department heads to clear purchases with council before buying any equipment. Schneider unavailable for comment.
