Exploratory talks on merging St. Paul and St. Mary Catholic Schools in Norwalk have begun. A joint subcommittee of parish representatives will study the merger and report by year’s end. St. Paul School Board President William Kacmarsky confirmed discussions when asked by a parishioner.
At St. Paul Board of Education Catholic School Week meeting Fr. Gerald Stein urged federal aid for parochial education calling it a matter of church and community. He argued for using tax money to support schools and noted a potential merger could benefit both institutions.
In Damascus, a three hour session with President Assad led Kissinger to cancel a mosque visit, amid reports of a plot by Palestinian guerrillas to kill him. He instead flew to Israel with Assad concessions, aiding talks on Golan Heights troop separation.
Akron police say George Wallace Blake, 43, was arrested on extortion charges after a telephoned kidnapping threat against Ben Maidenburg, publisher of the Akron Beacon Journal. A WJW TV newsman traced the caller, links to an anonymous ransom claim, and FBI helped secure Maidenburg’s home.
