At the AMA 115th convention in Chicago doctors opposed to Medicare contemplate a potential floor fight as committees report on Medicare aspects to the House of Delegates.
Norwalk city council meets at 7 30 this evening to consider resolutions for plant improvements and boiler purchase. Council will review easements for sewer lines under the Norfolk and Western Railway on Old State Road in front of the electrical and water filtration plants.
Partly cloudy and warm with a high of 86 and a fair night at 65. Thursday improves sunny and warmer in the mid eighties. Tuesday high 80 and low 60. Marriage applications listed for Steven Lee Atkins to Janet Eileen Deppen and Columbus Woodruff to Mamie Evans. Births to Bernard and spouse Schaffer and Ernest H Kohlmyer Jr. Deaths note Darrin K Smith at four months in Erie PA and Anna Cramer aged 85.
Norwalk Planning and Zoning Commission votes unanimously to recommend city council zone 24 2130 acres off Old State Road as manufacturing M 1. The panel also tables Gulf Oil Corp. zoning change near Fritz Hilltop Gulf at Benedict and Norwood Avenues for July 12 consideration.
U S warplanes struck outskirts of Hanoi and Haiphong destroying about 40 percent of North Viet Nam oil storage. Soviet Tass denounced the attacks as criminal escalation. Seven American planes were claimed shot down by Hanoi.
Defense Secretary McNamara said U S air strikes on Hanoi and Haiphong oil depots aim to counter North Viet Nam reliance on trucks and power tunks. He noted 46 planes, one F105 lost, heavy damage to three main depots, and fires visible across multiple tanks. Preliminary intel cites about 80 percent of facilities destroyed.
Kadous Hall family members of New London file three separate suits in Huron County Common Pleas Court seeking 110000 total for injuries from a May 15 stroller crash on Ledgett Street. The defendants include Bjellen Owen 14 of 30 E Hooker St New London Melvin Lee Owen 30 E Hooker Sr and Nathan Owen of Wellington. The 8 month old Edward Hall was tossed from the stroller injuring both child and mother Evelyn Hall who sustained scratches and brush burns and has been unable to work since.
The Norwalk Chamber of Commerce considers a feasibility study on changing Norwalk's form of government. Members receive cards asking support for a committee to study options such as a city manager or full time mayor, with responses due by July 8.
St. Peter Lutheran Church members voted Tuesday night to proceed with working drawings and specifications for a new church at 243 Benedict Avenue. The facility would include 33 classrooms, a 572 seating nave, pastors offices, lounge, library, chapel and fellowship hall with an estimated cost of 700000 by architect Thurman J. Peabody.
Norwalk School Board plans a committee meeting tonight or Thursday to discuss hiring a new principal for Norwalk Junior High after Lowell C. Ruggles announced his resignation after 13 years in the Norwalk system. Ruggles will become Avondale High School principal in Auburn Heights Michigan and oversee a 2.5 million project for a new high school.
A 7 year old Norwalk girl Deborah Kay Wagner was bitten on the right knee by a German Shepherd owned by Robert Colish of 11 East Washington Street. Colish says the dog has up to date shots and police will observe the animal for 10 days. he was warned about the dog ordinance.
John Charles Sprowl reports a German Shepherd owned by David Jagel escaped and bit his Pekingese, which required stitches and died while under sedation. Sprow fears future escapes may threaten his two small dogs.
A noon Tuesday crash on the Ohio Turnpike near the Sandusky Norwalk interchange killed Darrin K. Smith four months of Erie and left six others, including two families from Wisconsin, with injuries. The 1965 vehicle crashed into a turnpike sign in heavy rain. investigation continues as Kubach-Smith Funeral Home handles arrangements.
