Cleveland man arraigned on threat to Carter and Kennedy

Edward M. Lurie, 34, of Cleveland Heights, was arraigned on charges of threatening to assassinate President Carter and Senators Kennedy and Percy. He was ordered held without bond pending a June 30 preliminary hearing. Lurie faces up to five years if convicted.

Veteran Bettis jailed for KKK violence in Alabama

James Bettis, World War II veteran with four decorations and a battle wound, received a two year prison sentence on three counts of Ku Klux Klan violence intended to terrorize Black residents in Talladega County. U S District Judge Frank McFadden rejected leniency based on his military record.

A Huron County grand jury indicted Silas Slone 29 of Willard on charges of menacing and trespassing connected to the death of Wilbur Hershiser 62 of New Haven Township The case stemmed from an incident June 10 when Slone on Hershiser’s property argued with him and allegedly struck him causing suffocation by choking The trespassing and menacing counts are misdemeanors

Welfare suit seeks halt to county relief cuts in Ohio

Two Huron County residents filed a federal class action in Toledo challenging a December policy that reduces general relief payments after 90 days. Storms bring minor damage across Huron County Ohio

Severe thunderstorms raked Huron County and northern Ohio with heavy rain and strong winds. 2.1 inches fell at Cleveland Hopkins Airport with gusts to 47 mph, while outages affected Firelands Electric Cooperative customers near New London and Norwalk’s jail, though most power was restored by late night. 100 customers lost service briefly, and a tornado uprooted a tree near Willard without causing damage.

Serbian hijacker surrenders at Shannon Ireland airport

Nikola Kavaja a 45 year old Serbian nationalist who faced conspiracy to murder Yugoslav diplomats in Chicago surrendered to police at Shannon International Airport after his plane from New York landed. He traveled via Chicago and New York assembling negotiators including his lawyer. Irish troops guarded the surrender as police recaptured control.
