Severe Platte River floods sweep suburban Omaha causing at least one death and multiple drownings. National Guard activated. water supplies polluted. search teams probe for two mothers and three infants swept away.
George C. Lowe of Atlantic Refining Co. urged Ohio State Automobile Association delegates that parents must educate their children about driver safety and traffic laws. He said without parental interest and respect for law enforcement, kids will not learn to obey rules.
Warren Nelson Ward aged 18 of Collins faces two charges after two separate city accidents. He first lost control on Harris Street turning onto Woodlawn Avenue, then backed into a car near Seminary Street. No injuries were reported. Ward was cited into Mayor's Court for speeding and improper backing.

U.S. and Japanese aircraft parachuted emergency supplies into Niigata as fires from petroleum tanks raged. Japan reported 24 killed, 282 injured, with 10 missing as 3,500 troops aided relief effort amid logistics and pestilence fears.
Claudette Bauer of route 1 Willard was named 1964 Huron County Dairy Princess by the Huron Dairy Service Unit at its June meeting. She will compete in the State Dairy Princess Contest June 26 27 at the Fort Hayes Hotel in Columbus sponsored by the American Dairy Association of Ohio. The daughter of Mr and Mrs Claude Bauer and a 1964 Willard High School graduate.
Mississippi man charged with first degree murder in the shooting death of former New London resident Robert B. Smith 26 at Barbara's Drive-In near Belzoni. Sheriff Puvis said Smith was killed during a tavern brawl escalation early Sunday morning.
This Is Tonight Smith died after two gunshot wounds at Humphreys County Memorial Hospital at 4 a.m. Sheriff Puvis said G. W. Wade of Belzoni is charged with first degree murder and bound over to the July Grand Jury. preliminary hearing waived. Mississippi death penalty applies. Smith, once of New London, lived in Indianola five months and worked at Modern Co. factory. Funeral planned at Eastman Funeral Home New London with burial in Grove Street Cemetery. He leaves a widow Barbara and children Mary Beth Ty, plus relatives in Granite City Norwalk Danville and Red Haw.
Norwalk City Council moved to rezone land near the Superior plant to support room for Superior Coach Co. A first reading was given to the ordinance, with a public hearing scheduled for 7 30 p m Monday July 21 in the council chambers. The council also authorized sale of notes totaling 103000 to finance sewer improvements while planning a future bond issue. A fire prevention code was introduced, creating a fire prevention bureau within the fire department and setting standards for flammable materials.
Norwalk board accepts Superintendent James H. McBride’s July 31 resignation and begins interviews for a new leader. Dr. William B. Holman notes a decision may come later this week as four to seven new teachers are discussed and building maintenance plans are approved.
Norwalk elementary teachers spent hours after school studying and consulting to improve English and music programs. The Norwalk Board of Education adopted a new English series for grades two through six, plus Ginn Elementary English for first grade, after a committee reviewed 11 series.
Huron County representative Harry V. Jump criticized the Supreme Court ruling on state apportionment. He warned Ohio may need to merge counties for legislative districts and called the court’s stance an overreach. He noted Ohio’s Hanna Amendment and that the case on Ohio’s apportionment is pending at the Court with a federal ruling favoring Ohio previously.
West German students planned to light a torch in John F Kennedy Square to mark the East German uprising for food and freedom against the Communists. The anniversary was a public holiday in West Berlin and West Germany, called a day of unity despite Communist denouncement. West German President Heinrich Luebke arrived from Bonn to observe.
