In Columbus the correctional institute superintendent testified restraints including bed chaining are the most humane method to curb unruly inmates, with alternatives of physical force and mace. Three former inmates testified guards chained them, denied food, and blocked restroom access, citing violent histories.
Gov. James A. Rhodes ordered flags at the Statehouse and other state installations flown at half-staff to honor John Wayne who died of cancer at age 72. Wayne was described as embodying the American spirit and a great patriot.

Wilbur Hershiser 62 of New Haven Township died from suffocation after choking on vomit at Willard Area Hospital. Huron County Sheriff says altercation with Silas Slone near a grave pit led to the incident. Slone charged with involuntary manslaughter, released on $12,000 bond as investigation continues.
