Ceremony marks end of Israeli occupation in Lebanon
Israel withdrew its remaining troops from southern Lebanon ending a 91 day occupation. A border ceremony at Meis el Jebel saw the Israeli flag replaced by the Lebanese flag as Israeli and Christian forces observed the handover. Fighting in northern Lebanon reportedly claimed dozens of lives, including the son of former president Suleiman Franjieh, amid coincident withdrawals and a shift of peacekeeping expectations to Christian allies. A top Israeli official said the move aimed to leave southern Lebanon to Christian allies rather than the UN peacekeeping force.
