Water needs rise with heat in rural areas says farm column
Farm And City by John K Wells notes hot weather drives water demand for livestock and households. Cattle on pasture drink 20 to 25 gallons daily for 70 pound milk cows, horses need 10 to 12 gallons per day, a rural family uses about 200 gallons daily, and a typical dairy farm may use 2500 to 3000 gallons, including the farm family. Rural water supply is stressed in Huron County with limited underground sources and calls for rural water districts or deep wells.
