UPI reports Governor Nelson A Rockefeller said he would call a summit of Western European heads of state to align East West relations and trade policy. He argued an Atlantic partnership should replace a solely protective Europe policy in his prepared Town Hall speech.
Four armed inmates seized a prison office with 21 hostages and held out for over 26 hours as hostages cried out and windows shattered. The grievances were published by the Atlanta Journal, and the captors agreed to surrender after the story appeared. Sixteen men and five women were held, all to be released soon. The group included a murderer and three robbers who had seized the hostages in a bold escape attempt Tuesday morning.
Paris reports the government bans all demonstrations nationwide and orders dissolution of several leftist organizations and private militias amid fresh clashes between police and students. Tear gas and Molotovs escalate violence as authorities act.
Charles Luna, president of the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen, in Trainman News, denounced the Kennedy funeral train as a disgrace and affront. He questioned the eight plus hour trip from New York to Washington on Penn Central tracks and criticized the equipment and a brake sticking incident. He noted the Kennedy family chose a train to honor the senator and urged better arrangements.

The bid from L S Snyder & Sons of Port Clinton was accepted and work is to finish in 90 days amid protests from Sleepy Hollow residents over funding and fairness.
About 4000 people and 40 bands will march in a parade here Saturday afternoon at 1 30 in connection with the 94th Annual Convention of the North Ohio Volunteer Firemen. The procession will start at the main street and proceed through downtown.
Preschoolers at Norwalk celebrate Safety Town kicking off at League Street School. Norwalk Police sponsor the program to teach policemen, firemen, and traffic safety with new miniature downtown stores and a courthouse at intersections. Children ride kiddie cars as Patrolman Short signals pedestrians to pass.
Health officials shut the Elks Country Club pool after inspectors found extensive algae growth. Wapiti Swim Club officials had used creek water to refill the pool, despite a policy forbidding it. Health department assistant Clarence Ellett said creek water could not be used for replacement, risking high bacteria counts. Pool president Tom Downer cited a valve leak and limited well water as reasons, with reopening expected later today or Thursday. The Norwalk Municipal Pool also closed after vandals dirtied it, with cleanup completed and reopening planned. Police announced street closures and parking restrictions for an upcoming parade, detailing routes and towing penalties.
A 74-year-old Norwalk man, Robert L. Widman of 20 Oak St, was admitted six hours after a two vehicle crash. He suffered a lip laceration and multiple contusions and was listed in satisfactory condition. Police say Widman driving westbound on East Elm crossed the centerline and hit Lloyd I. Wilber, 38, of New London driving eastbound. Both cars had extensive front end damage.
EHOVE Vocational School opening in September remains possible but uncertain as 21 rainy May days delay progress. Superintendent Creighton Christ says plans proceed at full speed unless told otherwise. Architects will present a progress report at the EHOVE Board meeting, with hiring plans for eight to ten teachers and final equipment bids on the agenda.
The Norwalk City Board of Education hired seven new teachers including Dale Berner and Larry Donahue and James L. Smith, accepted resignations from five staff, approved a 72 passenger school bus for 8410 and authorized emergency purchase with 51 percent state reimbursement.
Senate Democratic Leader Mike Mansfield urged in Washington that presidential nominees be chosen by simultaneous primaries in all states and elected by popular vote to assure the survival of the American political system. He spoke to the Senate on Tuesday outlining changes to the electoral process.
