Stenvig Wins Minneapolis Mayor Election Promises Law Order

Charles Stenvig a police detective and political newcomer won the Minneapolis mayoral race by about a two to one margin. He pledged to bring law and order to a city with relatively little racial trouble.

Sunny and warmer today with highs in the low to mid 80s. Tonight partly cloudy and warm with lows in the 60s. Thursday remains partly cloudy with highs in the 80s and a chance of showers or thundershowers. Friday turns cloudy with showers and cooler at night. Winds shift from southwest to south through the period. Norwalk highs 73, low 40. humidity readings shown. no precipitation. Salary Decision Slated Tonight

New salary schedules for Norwalk school faculty and non teaching personnel will be discussed at the board of education meeting tonight. The certificated schedule would take effect Sept. 1, replacing the 1969 plan. Also on the agenda are negotiations with Norwalk Teachers Association, six resignations, and recommendations for four new teachers. The board will consider new social studies texts for grades 1-6 and English texts for junior high.

Thieu Signals Flexibility on South Vietnam Elections

President Thieu returned from Midway Island signaling openness to negotiating election terms with the Viet Cong before the 1971 vote. He warned against any coalition with the Communists, saying advocates would be punished, a stance seen as domestically tough yet aligned with Nixon’s election views.

Grand Jury Faults Hawthornden Hospital In 1960s Ohio

Summit County grand jury reports high drunkenness and rape at Hawthornden State Mental Hospital Akron. They say five female patients become pregnant each year, cite lax security and unauthorized alcohol, and urge inspector visits, higher pay, more staff, and full-time psychiatrists.

Willard Voters Back Renewal Levy Amid Rejected New Measure

Willard residents approve a 4.5 mill school operating levy renewal by 1,059 to 443 while voting down a 4 mill new levy 681 to 819. Total ballots 1,567. The renewal carried in most precincts, with narrow support in three Willard districts.

Rubbish fire damages truck at local dealer yard

A truck loaded with rubbish caught fire at Bob Meyer Chevrolet on Milan Avenue causing about 100 dollars in damage. The blaze burned tires and sides of the truck on site. Firefighters also extinguished a grass fire on Gibbs Road near Route 601 later Tuesday afternoon. Cause of the fires was not determined.

Akron Financier Settles Huge Tax Case for 9.5 Million

Sidney Albert of Akron reached a $9.5 million settlement in a landmark U.S. Tax Court case in Washington. The suit initially involved about $30 million. Albert’s Cleveland attorney John Lynch declined to discuss payment timing.

Norwalk Confers Diplomas to 185 Seniors at Graduation

The 185 members of Norwalk High School graduation received diplomas at Norwalk Junior High School. Dr. Albion Gotaas praised seniors with 3.0 or higher averages. Jed Bohn introduced guest speaker Dr. A M Paxon who urged common sense to meet world conflict and change. The ceremony noted EHOVE school attendance and 90 graduates winning 45 college acceptances with 20 scholarships. The Junior Symphonic Band performed Pomp and Circumstance and New World Symphony.
