Gag Writers Explain Cleveland as Funny Prop

Radnor Pennsylvania UP I reports Cleveland gag writers mostly native to the city joke about their hometown out of affection. Ann Elder notes if writers didn t love Cleveland they wouldn t zing it. The piece cites Mayor Perk s hair on fire and Cuyahoga River pollution as catalysts for the humor. Jack Riley says Laugh In launched Cleveland to humorous fame and a coterie of writers formed. NBC censored ethnic jokes but chose a funny city for the gag. Cleveland humor is framed as affectionate, not abusive.
