Massive air search for missing RC135 over Bering Sea

FAIRBANKS Alaska API. An RC135 four engine Strategic Air Command plane with 19 servicemen aboard vanished 30 minutes after takeoff from Shemya in the western Aleutians. It was en route to Filson Air Force Base near Fairbanks. The Pentagon said the plane was not shot down.

Tricky Maneuvers blamed in Melbourne Evans collision

The Melbourne's skipper said both ships were darkened and zigzagging during maneuvers when they collided 350 miles south of Saigon. The Evans was said to be at fault for not answering two collision signals, and 74 American sailors were killed.

Bedford marks D-Day memory amid quiet anniversary

Virginia town of Bedford, population 3800 near Roanoke, recalls Omaha Beach casualties from June 6 1944 where 37 of 2000 in a Bedford unit died and 93 percent of the men in the local company were lost. Survivors recount the day as the longest of their lives and note the 25th anniversary passes with few ceremonies.

Meeting Tuesday On Ambulance Service

A meeting set for 7 30 p m Tuesday at Norwalk City Hall will discuss creating a private professional ambulance service for Norwalk and nearby areas. Attendees include Erie and Huron county reps, officials, and funeral directors. Funeral homes seek new arrangements as costs rise. The city could grant a contract to a private operator and define service area.

Third Man Arrested In Willard Elementary Break-In

A third man, Wayne T. Patrick, 19, of Willard, was jailed after the Eastside Elementary School break-in. Two other young men were already charged and jailed earlier in the week.
