Authorities identified Gerald W. Miller, 26, of East Liverpool Ohio, as the drowned man recovered from the Ohio River Saturday. Two other men in the boat survived the incident.
Robert Schacht 21 year old Marquette resident rode his ten speed on a 22 day cross country hitchhiking trip. He traveled from Monterey California to New London visiting historical sites along the way and averaging about 50 miles daily. He relied on rides in pickups vans and station wagons and camped at farms or campgrounds with a small pup tent. He carries a 30 pound pack with repair gear and a cooking pot but often forgoes meals preferring bread cheese and water or pie and coffee when dining out. He experienced rain since Illinois and a fall in New London this week. His father Elmer Schacht was a former superintendent of schools and heads the NMU English Department in Marquette.
