Superstition and Unorthodox Prep Lift Truckers to District Title Hopes

Benedictine faces a Truckers squad famed for ritual pregame routines. Greg Russell, pitcher and third baseman, buys six packs of gum, keeps his glove in his jacket pocket, and arranges hat and jacket on the bench before each plate appearance. He swings with a seven-based rhythm and demands no one touch his gear. Russell credits luck shifts to coach Derver and notes teammate Jimmy Arlin also believes in lucky pants. John Christopher uses a cobra-like batting stance that yields a .500 average, while Gary Wilde relies on quick wrists to power a key district final homer. Wes Douglas adds speed and bunting flair, aiding two state tournament wins with death by own action squeezes.
