FTC seeks block on Exxon Reliance takeover

The FTC will ask a federal court to halt Exxon Corp’s 1.7 billion acquisition of Reliance Electric Co of Cleveland, saying the merger could substantially lessen competition in electronic variable speed drives for electric motors. Rhodes vetoes bill to speed unemployment benefits

Gov. James A. Rhodes vetoed a bill that would remove the waiting week for unemployment compensation, citing a $31 million price tag and potential harm to the system. The measure, backed by Sen. Tenneco admits illegal gas shipments in 1973 74

Washington UPI report says Tenneco Inc admitted illegally shipping natural gas during 1973 and 1974 without federal permission and agreed to a $1 million fine after plea bargaining with the Justice Department. The case, linked to Louisiana gas shipments, marked the first prosecution under the Natural Gas Act of 1938.

Norwalk Man Rescued From Early Morning House Fire

An early morning fire caused about 6500 dollars in damage to R B Fallen’s home at 9 St Marys St. Neighbor Steve Guest 19 kicked in the front door and woke Fallen, allowing him to escape with his dog. Firefighters battled smoke for nearly four hours. Investigators probed a possible short circuit in garage electrical equipment. Harley Davidson motorcycle in the garage sustained about 3300 dollars in damage.

Immunity sought in Huron County drug case

Prosecutor Richard Hauser filed a motion in Common Pleas Court seeking immunity for a 20 year old Holiday Lakes woman in exchange for her testimony in the Steven Sampsel Rhonda Bowman case. The May 25 raid yielded nearly seven thousand dollars in cash.

Hybrid ape Shawn Shawn born in Atlanta zoo

A 4 year old female hybrid ape named Shawn Shawn, born at Grant Park Zoo, is the offspring of a siamang mother and a gibbon father. Genetic analysts Dr. David A. Shafer and Dr. Richard H. Myers describe the hybrid as a siabon, noting the two parents are genetically farther apart than humans and great apes.

Gladys Irene Hall of Lorain Public Library is named new Norwalk Public Library director by the local board. Psychiatrist Burglar Stockpiled Guns for Anti Communist Plot

Dr. Ian S. Gale a 41 year old Columbia psychiatrist with a law degree and high income was ordered to psychiatric observation after police found a cache valued around 500000 in guns swords jewelry and cash in two locked rooms at his home. Authorities say he planned burglaries over five years and may be linked to about 150 cases. Gale held bank accounts under aliases and had a Swiss account with about 22000 Swiss francs. He graduated from Temple University medical school and USC law in 1977.
