Hearts Transplant Donor and Recipient Named
In London David Birkbeck and his wife agreed to donate their hearts. Mrs. Birkbeck recalled their plans even as the decision arrived Friday. The donor’s heart went to Reginald Forde 48, the world’s 28th heart transplant patient. Birkbeck 34 died from an automobile crash. Doctors at National Heart Hospital performed the surgery. In Washington Rep Charles Vanik proposed expanding draft boards to five with a younger member under 26, to improve selection until a better system exists. He favors draftee selection by lottery.

Cleveland Mourns Three Officers Slain as National Guard Withdraws
Three Cleveland policemen were shot and killed during a gunbattle on the East Side triggering looting and arson. Fred Ahmed Evans, a black nationalist, was charged with their murders as 3,000 National Guard troops began withdrawal.
