Edison Claims Nuclear Generation Cheaper
Edison vice president Robert J. McWhorter testified at Ohio Power Siting Commission hearings that Erie nuclear generation would cost about two thirds of coal fired power, estimating 62 mills per kilowatt hour for nuclear versus 81.8 mills for the coal option over 35 years. He cited 2.7 billion capital savings in 1977 dollars for the nuclear plant and noted CAPCO foresees potential regional power shortages without the unit by 1986.
