Economists warn the American standard of living is collapsing as inflation erodes buying power from $1 to 90 cents. Higher home prices and mortgage rates leave many families renting, while GDP drops and consumer sentiment points to an impending economic downturn.
Norwalk officials report the water system remains adequate despite little rain since July 1. Upper Reservoir is full while Memorial Lake sits 24 inches low and Lower Reservoir 13 inches down. Local back up well field at Harris Avenue added since the 1971 72 drought. Data collectors for county revaluation visit Norwalk, Milan, and Wakeman.
President Nixon urged Americans to spend less and save more while opposing tax cuts or wage price controls as inflation remedies. He announced 40,000 federal job cuts and a $5 billion budget reduction and urged patience for long term growth. In Congress, the House Judiciary Committee prepared impeachment charges over Watergate and abuse of power with votes expected to follow.
Gerald A. Spalsbury, longtime Reflector press room superintendent and former shop foreman, retires Aug. 3 after 44 years in print, tracing a career from lead casting to offset photography and mentoring younger staff. He began in Norwalk and Milan trades, helped adapt to the 1964 switch to offset, and leaves a family of four with memories of a bustling shop and barter era.
The Wakeman Homecoming fest starts tonight at 8 30 with a street dance. A parade kicks off Saturday at 10 a m and the midway opens at 11 a m. Contests and exhibitions run all day and the Queen's Ball closes the events from 9 p m to 1 a.m. Sunday features more midway rides and outdoor contests for adults and families.

Norwalk Elks Lodge members vote to not sell their country club on New State Road rescinding a May 23 sale decision. Exalted Ruler Lloyd Smith announced plans to operate as usual with a fall schedule while officials declined to comment on future plans. The 50 acre site includes a nine hole golf course pool pro shop and club building three miles south of Norwalk.
