Midget Racer Kills Two at Putnam County Fair

A midget auto race crash at the Putnam County Fair in Ottawa Ohio killed Charles Horman 19 Cloverdale and Gary Burdon 18 Spencerville and injured nine. The tragedy stunned spectators as the vehicle struck a fence line amid crowds.

Average American loses buying power in three months

The government reported that purchasing power fell for Americans by $10 during the three months ending June 30, as inflation and higher taxes offset income gains. Per capita income slid from $2,287 to $2,277 amid tax and withholding changes and inflation adjustments.

Ten-Year-Old Girl Injured in Newton Street Crash

Lucinda Lynn Wright ten, of 124 Newton Street, was hurt Monday when her bicycle was struck by a westbound car at Newton and West Washington Streets. She suffers a right leg fracture and lacerations and is in fair condition at Fisher Titus Memorial Hospital. The driver, Raymond E. Felter, 41, said the girl did not stop. a witness said she rode into the car.

Ashland Man Injured in U S 250 Crash Near Norwalk

John H. Kahl, 67, of Ashland, was driving south on U S 250 two miles south of Norwalk when he left the road struck a bridge corner. He suffered a possible nose fracture and planned to seek care from his family doctor.

Policeman Appointed to Norwalk Police Department

Richard Mahaffey, 25, of Milan Avenue, has been appointed as a special policeman by the Norwalk Board of Control after Wednesday exams. He will fill the vacancy from Capt. Orin Doane’s upcoming retirement on August 15 during his vacation. A new captain will be named before that date. Mahaffey previously worked in industry.

Norwalk Chamber OKs Government Study and Zoning Change

The Norwalk Chamber of Commerce board approved forming a government study committee to evaluate local government forms including the city manager and full time mayor options. Firelands Development Co. received approval to zone its Route 18 frontage for industrial use, with chamber cooperation on an industrial park promotion. George Manyak announced public phones for downtown and proposed Norwalk promotional signs, while Wayne Kenney reported on new parking lot signs.

Man Injured In Pike Crash Dies

Chester F. Forbieter aged 52 of North Olmsted died early today at Fisher-Titus Memorial after sustaining injuries Friday when his car reportedly lost control on the Ohio Turnpike three miles east of the Norwalk Sandusky interchange. He had been a Fisher-Titus patient since Friday evening. A native of Fairview Park, he worked as a sales analyst for Ohio Nut and Bolt Co. His wife Theresa survives.

NL Girl 7 Gets Open Heart Operation

Nine people traveled from the nine area to Cleveland's University Hospital for an open heart operation on 7-year-old Susan Morrow of New London. Donors included Charles Meyer Lyle Knapp Sterling Ward and several New London residents. Others driving the group were Mrs Ramona Boles Mrs Marilyn Brunner Mrs Alice Ruth Ward Mrs Earl McLoney and Mrs Ann Perry.
