Violence Rises as Civil Rights Protests Continue
Civil rights demonstrations across seven states turned violent on Friday. In Anniston Alabama a Black man lay critically wounded from a .45 bullet, paralyzed from the waist, as night riders and police clashed. In Bogalusa and Greensboro Alabama, arrests and injuries followed confrontations between pickets, bystanders, and police. Crawfordville named Jesse Meadows, the south's first Black police chief, amid desegregation tensions. CORE plans a protest march on police HQ in Bedford Suyvesant after a fatal shooting by a white patrolman. Brooklyn DA launches investigation to curb violence.
