Mafia don executed in New York restaurant

In Brooklyn the powerful mob boss Carmine Galante was killed during a lunch at Joe and Mary's Italian American Restaurant. Gunmen burst in, firing with submachine guns and shotguns, killing Galante, his henchman Nino Coppola, and the restaurant owner Giusseppe Turano, while Turano's son was wounded. The attack ended a planned farewell to Europe for Turano.

Palestinian gunmen seize Egyptian Embassy in Ankara

Heavily armed Palestinians storm the Egyptian Embassy in Ankara, seize the ambassador and about 20 staff, demand Turkey recognize the PLO and sever ties with Egypt. Oil executives urge against windfall tax on Alaska oil

Exxon Standard Oil of Ohio and Atlantic Richfield told the Senate Finance Committee they oppose the windfall profits tax as unnecessary and counterproductive. They warned the House plan would raise about 40 billion dollars in windfall profits during 1980 to 1984 amid higher world prices and the decontrol of domestic oil prices.

County to vote on new taxes
