Boston Pops maestro Arthur Fiedler died at his home in Boston at age 84. He had been in ill health, and was found by his wife around 7:30 a.m. His career spanned five decades blending classical and popular music including the iconic July 4th Esplanade concerts.

Born in Boston on December 17, 1894, Fiedler grew from a violinist in the Boston Symphony Orchestra to a conductor. He studied in Berlin before joining the BSO in 1915, where he broadened to viola piano celesta organ and percussion. His early drudgery gave way to showmanship that defined the Pops era.
