United Airlines Viscount crashes in Smoky Mountains killing 39
A four engine United Airlines Viscount exploded or burned in flight over the Great Smoky Mountains killing 39 aboard. FBI and CAB opened a federal inquiry into possible violations while guards sealed the crash site near Newport Tennessee eight miles from Knoxville. Witnesses varied on whether the plane exploded, or crashed ablaze into a hillside, with pilot Capt Oliver E Sabathe reporting normal conditions 13 minutes before the crash.

Man Pleads Guilty To Shoplifting At Norwalk Center
A 25 year old Mansfield man, John L. Spears, was charged with petty larceny after a store cashier reported a shoplifting incident at Norwalk Bargain Center. Spears was tackled by manager Paul Simon, restrained, and later sentenced to 90 days in the Huron County Jail. Two accomplices fled in a 1957 Mercury. one man is described as having heavy facial scars.

Plymouth Soldier Killed In Germany
Chief Warrant Officer Donald Polachek 34 was killed July 1 in Germany after stepping from a military vehicle into a car. A Willard native who lived in Plymouth, his funeral is at 2 p.m. Saturday at McQuate Funeral Home with burial in Greenlawn Cemetery. He is survived by his wife Mary Carnahan, two daughters Janice and Jacquelyn, a son Michael, his father Frank Polachek of Willard and five brothers. He was due to return to the U.S. this fall.

Ohio delegates to vote their choice on first ballot
Gov James A Rhodes and State Chairman Ray C Bliss announced that 58 Ohio Republican delegates will be pledged to favorites on the first ballot to avoid a primary fight.
