Peru and Soviet arms bids test U S ties and Peru's course
Secret documents reveal the Soviet offer of 36 supersonic fighters to Peru under President Morales Bermudez and the ensuing political pressure within Lima. Bermudez kept relations with the United States as the primary goal while negotiations quietly continued. The deal faced hurdles as Peru struggled with aircraft maintenance and parts, and U S officials noted a potential shift away from the Kremlin. Meanwhile, FBI agent Fred B. is honored in Hall of Heroes for defusing two time bomb cases and a hijacking, with his faith cited as key to his calm, careful actions.
