Antiwar Senators Launch Madison Avenue Push for McGovern Hatfield Plan
Antiwar senators begin a national ad campaign using television radio and newspaper ads to win support for the McGovern Hatfield amending measure to require Nixon to withdraw U S troops from Vietnam by June 30 unless extended by Congress. The push targets primetime broadcasts in about a quarter of the country and culminates in three weeks with Senate consideration. The effort is funded by Advertising People Against the War and a May 12 telethon raised 480000 dollars with 70000 already spent on ads and more expected. Nixon countered by saying the McGovern Hatfield amendment would derail Paris negotiations and demanded free equal time to respond.
