Six Blind Passengers Barred From United Flight
National Federation of the Blind says six blind travelers from Minneapolis to Baltimore were forbidden to take their white canes aboard a United Airlines flight from Cleveland Hopkins International Airport. They refused to surrender canes at takeoff and landing, opting to ride a bus instead. FAA rules require canes to be stowed during critical phases. United cites safety. The group includes Joyce Scanlon and her husband Thomas, plus James Schleppegrel, Mary Hartle, Stewart Prost, and Bradley Hodges. The incident prompted varied accounts of tone and enforcement.
