Larry Fine, the frizzy-haired member of the Three Stooges, died Friday in Hollywood after a stroke. He was 73. The trio created more than 200 film shorts beginning in 1930 with Ted Healy, delighting generations with roughhouse slapstick.
Police in Scottsdale say Leslie Strain 39 wore a security guard uniform and an out of order sign on a night depository at Continental Bank. Seven people deposited Friday night before a depositor alerted police, who arrested Strain without incident on theft suspicion.
Deputies responded to the Midwest Coliseum after ticketless fans broke glass and caused damage while trying to enter a Led Zeppelin show. The concert continued as security kept order outside the $25 million venue.
A dynamite bomb exploded in a crowded Wall Street club, killing four and injuring at least 40. A waiter described the blast as horrible while nearby Fraunces Tavern patrons fled. The Fraunces Tavern building honors George Washington’s farewell address site.
The Palestine Liberation Organization reports it has meted out the "most severe punishment" to the four Arabs who hijacked a British airliner from Dubai to Tunis and killed a West German passenger last November. No details of the punishment were given by the PLO spokesman.
Rep. Robert J. Lagomarsino described in the Congressional Record a method to mail letters without stamps by swapping names on the envelope and upper left corner. The Postal Service would return the item stamped returned for postage. A top official warned that mailing without postage is a criminal offense with up to $300 fine.

Attendees are advised to dress warmly as the building heat will be off.
The House committee voted 19 to 15 to delay Ford’s 1 a barrel oil tariff for 90 days and linked the move to raising the debt ceiling from 495 to 531 billion through June 30. Treasury says debt limits must rise by Feb. 18 to pay bills. White House calls the tactic old fashioned politics.
