Priest Charged In Kissinger Kidnap Plot

A federal grand jury indicted Rev. Philip Berrigan and ten co conspirators in a jail cell plot to blow up heating systems in Washington and kidnap Henry Kissinger. The case names multiple priests nuns a former priest a Pakistani scholar and other associates. The plan targeted government buildings and sought ransom or avoidance of state actions with explosives and hostage taking.

Postal Service hints at eight cent first class stamp

Postmaster General Winton Blount announced at a news conference that the new USPS board will consider a postage hike. He projected the six cent first class stamp rising to eight cents with an effective date likely this spring. Meanwhile winter weather froze roads across Huron County Ohio causing accidents and an emergency landing.

The FHA and VA cut mortgage interest ceilings from 8 to 7 percent, saving about $8 monthly on a $25,000 25 year loan. A VA guaranteed loan at 7 percent costs $184.75 a month versus $193 at 8 percent.

Two Explosions Hit British Minister Home in London

Two bomb blasts damaged the North London Georgian mansion of Employment Minister Robert Carr during a Tuesday night attack. Carr his wife and younger daughter were inside but unharmed. Police called it an apparent assassination attempt as demonstrations against Carrs industrial relations bill proceeded nationwide. A third unexploded charge was found in the front garden.

Allies Launch Major Drive to Reopen Highway 4

More than 13 000 South Vietnamese and Cambodian troops push from southwest of Phnom Penh to recapture Highway 4 linking the capital with Kompong Som. Viet Cong contact occurs within hours, two South Vietnamese wounded near Pich Nil Pass.

Democrats Name Nine Registrars

The Huron County Democratic Policy Committee recommends nine deputy registrar of motor vehicles nominees including Katherine Dombart of the Huron County Auto Club. Other candidates span Bellevue Greenwich Monroeville New London North Fairfield Plymouth Wakeman and Willard with Dombart to stay in Norwalk. The Ohio Department of Motor Vehicles will make the official appointment. Deputies collect 50 cents per license plate set and fees for driver licenses.

Linn Maintains Chair as Council Ends Closed Meetings

The Norwalk City Council restored George F. Linn Jr. as chair of the fire and building code committee and voted to discontinue regular closed meetings. The move rebuked Council President K. S. Flickinger, who had appointed Domenic Coletta a week earlier, claiming Linn had not held a committee meeting in a year. Council members cited forgotten procedure rules and demanded adherence as they opened biweekly work sessions to the public.
