Rhodes vows balanced Ohio budget with no new taxes

Governor James A. Rhodes announced a balanced two year budget for Ohio with no new taxes and challenged the Democratic led General Assembly to price all spending bills as he urged cooperation between the branches. In Kinshasa officials report nearly two thousand dead from the Nyragongo eruption in eastern Zaire with two new volcanoes erupting near Lake Kivu.

Man dies of exposure after power shutoff in Ohio home

Eugene J. Kuhn, 70, was found dead Tuesday in Mansfield due to exposure. Coroner Dr. Raymond Thabet said his unheated home lacked electricity from nonpayment, with unopened mail including a welfare letter that might have helped secure emergency utility funds.

Great Soda Pop War Drives Prices Back Up in Illinois

In Mattoon and nearby cities prices for eight packs of Pepsi-Cola and Coca Cola rose to 99 cents per carton after a brief dip to 39 and 49 cents. The price hike followed Pepsi's Dec. 20 move, triggering a regional soda war that unsettled grocers and led to bottlers briefly running out of bottles.

Denver firm to profit from canned cracker disposal plan

Denver businessman Bill Whitt of Three Way Enterprises said the firm won a $20,000 contract to remove and dispose of more than 53 million crackers and other items stored in 400 bomb shelters since the 1960s. About 500 tons of crackers will be sold as cattle feed to livestock producers. Disposal should take three to five months.

Elderly woman dies in cold after shed fire on farm

The frozen body of Sophia Zielinski, aged about 77 to 84, was found near a burned shed on her Peru Center Road farm. Coroner Dr. William B. Holman said burns were not fatal, suggesting she froze while attempting to reach help. Neighbors recall her moving from a trailer to a small shed heated by kerosene heaters. authorities speculate a flash fire while refueling may have trapped her. The body, found 25 feet from the shed, was later identified and sent to Drake Funeral Home for arrangements.
