Viet Nam police captured two Viet Cong militants pedaling toward a four story billet housing 66 American officers with a 275 pound plastic bomb. They planned to blow the billets at lunchtime.

Indian and Pakistan Leaders Meet in Soviet Peace Talks

In Tashkent the Indian Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri and Pakistani President Ayub Khan held a secret 50 minute meeting during Soviet backed talks aimed at narrowing the Kashmir dispute. The session followed smiles and a handshake and marked the first such encounter in two days.

Men On Go Linked To Higher Heart Attack Risk

A Mount Zion Hospital study reported in JAMA found that among 3 524 men aged 39 to 59 with no prior illness 85 percent of heart attack victims aged 39 to 49 were from Type A personalities marked by high drive and ambition. The study linked Type A behavior with greater heart risk and noted common indicators like high blood pressure and blood fat.

Chesapeake & Ohio and Norfolk & Western announce a merger to create a 26,400 mile system. The 59 page statement sent to 170,000 shareholders claims improved rail service and economic growth including national defense. Annual meetings to vote on May 12 in Cleveland and Roanoke, Virginia.

Real Estate Deeds and Mortgages Hit Highs in Huron County

Huron County records show 2,420 real estate deeds in 1965 and 2,210 in 1964 with Holiday Lakes contributing about 420 deeds each year. Fees totaled 20,742 in 1964 and 19,802 in 1965. 2,101 lease deeds were filed in 1964 versus 600 in 1965. Mortgage recordings were 2,498 in 1965 and 2,292 in 1964. recorder Jay Thomas notes these were among the highest fee totals.

County Appropriations Rise Slightly in 1966 Budget

Huron County commissioners approved 1966 general fund appropriations totaling 748 482 up 50 425 from 1965. The county highways budget stands at 986 000 up 6 000, while dog and kennel funding drops 670 59 to 16 200. The general fund supports operations of over 25 departments with no single major increase.

Lindsay Would Open Jail Doors If It Would Help

New York mayor John V. Lindsay told President Johnson’s top labor officials he would support releasing jailed transit union leaders to speed a settlement of the seven day transit strike. He met with Labor Secretary Wirtz and aides after contacting Johnson for help, and announced he had delayed an appeal to the Transit Authority for the release of TWU President Michael J. Quill and eight other leaders jailed for defying a court injunction.

Kean Mulls Re election as Huron County Auditor

Longtime Huron County Auditor Bernard F. Kean weighs whether to seek a new term as filing closes Feb 2 at 4 p.m. The Republican official has not yet filed nominating petitions while others pursue county positions. Incumbents seek four and six year terms for commissioner and probate judge.
