Airport Authority Re Elects Officers In Huron County

Huron County Airport Authority re elected officers at the annual meeting. Martha Johnson was hired as secretary treasurer with compensation to be determined. Paffenbarger was re elected president and John Baltes vice president. J T Lendrum was re appointed to a five year term. The board will seek an opinion on individual liability and meets in executive session January 12 to discuss site and financing.

Rhodes plans minimal Inauguration in Columbus

Plans were underway for the working clothes inauguration for Gov. James A. Rhodes and other Republican officials in Columbus. Rhodes, beginning his second term, said the ceremony would be simple at 8 a.m. under the capitol.

Freed Americans and Filipino Woman Return From Viet Cong Camp

Two American civilians and a Filipino widow freed after more than six months in a Viet Cong prison camp. UPI reports the trio, described as not in good shape, were freed as a Communist goodwill gesture. In Ohio, lawmakers study a 20 mill tax levy proposal to raise per pupil funding to $500 across 712 districts.

Scotland Yard reports the recovery of 8.4 million dollars in artworks stolen by a “thin man” burglar. The seized pieces include three Rembrandts and three Rubens, recovered Monday night after the theft on Saturday.

Norwalk Police Auxiliary Installs Officers at Station

The Norwalk Police Auxiliary held its annual installation Tuesday night at the police station. Thomas Doughty was installed as president with Richard Shaffer as vice president and John Meacer as secretary treasurer. Raymond Lescher was elected captain with Doughty and Homer Giles named as sergeants. Meacer earned praise for the fourth straight year for the most on duty hours. The next meeting is set for Jan 16.

Powell Faces Fight Over Seat and Chairmanship

Rep. Adam Clayton Powell plans to attend a Monday Democratic caucus to resist any move to strip him of the Education and Labor Committee chair. House investigators fired Powell's wife Yvette from her $20 578 a year post and questioned trips with a former beauty queen. The subcommittee noted Powell and secretary Corrine Huff used taxpayer funded trips under assumed names.

Norwalk Cab Co seeks higher taxi rates prompting a city council review. Committee chair G Ira Liedorff said the panel found the firm not in the black and may back a rise but could favor lower daytime increases to avoid hardship on seniors. The current franchise expires in December and an extension runs 30 days to January 20.

Monroeville Council Grants Emergency Pay Increases

Monroeville village council approved an emergency ordinance raising salaries for department heads and police and utility workers by 50 dollars monthly. Utility superintendent and police chief set at 575 dollars monthly, with police chief also earning 20 extra for street commissioner duties. patrolmen and utility staff assigned to classes A to D and hourly rates. Town Hall custodian 65 dollars monthly. fire chief 150 dollars yearly. fire engineer 125 yearly. volunteer firemen paid 3 dollars per practice up to eight annually.

Collins Man Sues Over 1965 Route 99 Accident

Clifford A. Price of DeRussey Road Collins files a $27 245 suit in Huron County Common Pleas Court against Thomas N. Tenny of Monroeville seeking damages for injuries from a collision on Route 99 south of Route 20 on January 16 1965. Price says his northbound car was stopped for high snowdrifts when Tenny driving a southbound truck struck it.

Erie Huron CAC to receive new federal funds soon

Clifford Cox of the Ohio Office of Opportunity says the Erie Huron Counties Community Action Commission remains active and should get word of a new grant shortly. The amount is expected to be well below the $56 680 originally requested, with funding dating from Governor Rhodes signature.
