When enameling small pieces such as tables and chairs, a workbench makes a convenient working height, according to the National Paint, Varnish and Lacquer Association. Place these small pieces upside down on the bench and do the underneath surfaces first. Then, turn them rightside up and finish painting. A bench makes it easier to do the best possible job of applying the paint. You'll be able to spot drips and uneven areas quickly.
