Military mutiny erupts across Ethiopia with troops and sailors seizing Massawa port. Emperor Haile Selassie appears on a balcony before loyal troops and calls for national unity as navy and air forces join the revolt seeking higher pay and better living conditions.
The Pittston Co. faces about 175 million dollars in damages in state and federal courts in West Virginia over the 1972 Buffalo Creek flood in Logan County. The disaster on February 26, 1972, created 118 deaths when a Buffalo Mining Co. refuse dam, a Pittston subsidiary, broke.
Pfc. Robert K. Preston, 20, who seized a helicopter at Ft. Meade Md and was chased by police to the White House lawn, has had his civil private pilot certificate revoked by the FAA. Secret Service gunfire brought him down near the President's office.
Police and villagers in the Orotava Valley reported seeing what appeared to be a balloon linked to missing American adventurer Thomas Gatch. The object drifted at about 6,000 feet toward the south south west for about an hour before vanishing into clouds, but the sighting could not be confirmed.
Washington reports that the January grocery market basket reached a record high and will rise further in spring and summer per Agriculture Department economists. Bakers warned of bread shortages unless wheat exports are slowed. Secretary Earl L. Butz denied the charges.
Gasoline at most Ohio stations will increase by at least two cents a gallon Friday due to new federal rules. Jere D. Crawford 21 pleads not guilty and not guilty by reason of insanity in Hooker brothers murder case. Ordered to 30 days examination at Lima State Hospital to determine trial competence. Another defendant Thomas J. Hedges 23 enters not guilty plea with potential April 16 trial. In Akron, Carl Bayless 17 charged with two counts of aggravated murder in the execution style killings of Mr. and Mrs. Anthony in a park. Victims found in prayer position. motive unclear. Bayless previously committed to Ohio Youth Commission and held at Youth Diagnostic Center and Training Institute Columbus before placement with a Columbus area group home.
New postage rates take effect Saturday with first class letters at 10 cents per ounce and airmail letters at 13 cents, up two cents. Parcel post rises about 11 percent, and second and third class and international rates increase. Old-rate deliveries apply for mail posted before midnight Friday. No changes to special delivery, insurance, COD, or money orders.
Mayor Thomas Bradley testified before a Senate antitrust panel that General Motors, Standard Oil and Firestone conspired for 35 years to dismantle Los Angeles rapid transit. He cited 1938 Pacific Transit Lines actions and the 1949 monopoly case, noting 1,164 miles of Pacific Electric tracks erased and electric cars replaced by diesel buses.
