Big Cats Sightings Near Maplehurst School

Dozens of Maplehurst students and staff report two cat like animals near the Maplehurst School area. Norwalk police and Huron County Game Warden Hank Tappel searched with a hunting dog but found no trace. Principal William Ruby and teachers described sightings though officials doubt the claim.

Ohio lawmakers seek automatic cost of living boosts for teachers

In Columbus Senator Michael J. Maloney introduced a bill to add automatic cost of living escalator increases to retirement disability and survivors benefits under the state Teachers Retirement System. In Oberlin the college president condemned a Thursday sit in by students and SDS members that forced Marine recruiters off campus. Sirhan Sirhan offered to plead guilty to first degree murder if no death penalty awaited, but the judge pushed ahead with the trial in Los Angeles. Senator Stephen Young proposed Cyrus Eaton as Cuba hijacking pact chair to secure prompt return of hijackers to the United States.

Indians Owner Plans Big Summit County Development

Vernon Stouffer owner of the Cleveland Indians outlines a multi million dollar project in northern Summit County. The plan includes an 18 hole golf course and convention center costing about 4 million dollars with a two year construction timeline. The proposal also features 300 apartment units pools a research and office center and a regional shopping center with no total cost yet provided.

Notre Dame President Says Get Tough Policy Backed

University of Notre Dame President Rev Theodore Hesburgh reported receiving 267 telegrams and letters in support of his tough policy to quell student demonstrations with only two critical responses. The deluge came within 48 hours of a policy statement threatening suspension.

Nineteen Youths Cited After Vermilion Party Raid

Nineteen teenagers from Huron Erie and Ottawa counties including two 17 year old girls from Norwalk were cited into Erie County Juvenile Court after a Vermilion party raid. Police found empty malt liquor bottles and some youths appeared intoxicated.

Truman Stricken By Acute Gastroenteritis

Former President Harry S. Truman, 84, was taken from his Independence home to Research Hospital with acute gastroenteritis. Mrs. Truman said the illness is not serious and he felt well earlier, with hospital officials reporting a satisfactory condition and no discomfort.

Berkeley Campus Erupts Over Reagan Visit

Three thousand demonstrators swarmed UC Berkeley as Gov. Ronald Reagan prepared to appear. They overturned police vans stoned officers and derided the regents meeting. Police fired tear gas which elicited a massive barrage before the crowd dispersed.

Car Hits Pole Injuring Baby on Route 61 East

A 9 month old baby girl, Anna Trach, was injured when a car driven by Sandra C. Trach, 26, left Route 61 East and struck a power pole and a mail box just west of Sand Road at 11 45 a.m. The child did not require hospitalization.

Kennedy, Nixon plan Berlin visits echoing JFK call

The report notes John F. Kennedy urged future leaders to "Go to Berlin" and that Nixon intends to visit Berlin as a Western outpost against East Germany. It recalls Kennedy's 1963 Berlin visit and the massive crowd joyous reception of the words Ich bin ein Berliner and the famous motorcade.

Vik VanHentenryck, 70, known as Norwalk's Good Humor Man For Christ, won the Rev. P.J. Garcia community service award at the Norwalk Jaycees Bosses Night dinner at Ellis Country Club. He is a deacon and Sunday school teacher at First Baptist Church and active in the Salvation Army and Gideons.
