Arson Probe Into Norwalk Church Fires Underway

A state fire marshal special unit will inspect two Norwalk fires at St Paul Episcopal Church parish house and the Salvation Army church to determine if arson occurred. Investigators will test burn samples while police and fire officials finalize the cause. The parish house suffered near-total destruction. the Salvation Army church had basement and lobby damage.

Trailer Truck Crashes Into Loaded School Bus in Dense Fog

In Lake Placid Florida a trailer truck hit a left turning school bus in dense fog at 7 40 a m near State Road 621 and U S 27. The crash killed three people including the bus driver and one student with more than a dozen students seriously injured while many others suffered lesser injuries.

Convicted Deputy Resigns Amid Racketeers Blame

Cuyahoga County Sheriff Ralph Kreiger accepted the resignation of Maj. Edward Payne, convicted of intimidating a former deputy and theft of confiscated property. Kreiger blamed Cleveland racketeers for the effort to unseat him, saying Payne’s arrest showed the crime apparatus’ reach and that Kreiger’s re election prospects were harmed. The sheriff described himself as a “little guy” with few establishment backing.

Longtime Norwalk musician and lay leader dies at 44

Edwin P. Riedy a 44 year old Norwalk resident and active St. Paul Catholic Church lay leader died unexpectedly Sunday. He suffered an apparent heart attack and was pronounced dead on arrival at Fisher-Titus Memorial Hospital. Riedy served in the Ohio National Guard and led a local music combo for 25 years. He is survived by his wife and several children and stepchildren. Services and burial are planned in Norwalk with religious rites at St. Paul Church. He was active in local civic and church groups and served as a school board member. He will be remembered as a prominent area musician and community figure.
