Former Gov. James A. Rhodes told a Pittsburg audience that President Nixon could rank among America's great presidents. He said Nixon parallels Lincoln in administrative brilliance and compassion for fellow man, noting Lincoln had no predecessors or successors.
Port Clinton Ohio UP I reports the Atomic Energy Commission hearing board will release its report on objections to the Besse-Davis nuclear power plant within about 45 days with written objections due in the next month. The hearing ended amid charges of unfairness claiming decisions had already been made.

Paul W. Robinson, Democratic mayoral candidate in Norwalk, filed petitions to run again for the charter commission. He and his family reside at 80 Eastwood Drive and he works as manager of the order and billing department for Johnson Corp. in Bellevue. He supports a city manager council government and joins six candidates in the commission race with a filing deadline of March 13 at 4 p.m.
Apollo 14 astronaut Edgar D. Mitchell conducted a personal telepathy experiment during the moon mission. NASA quarantine officials note he has not assessed results and that the test did not interfere with crew duties. CBS News reported Mitchell and an unnamed Chicago engineer coordinated card sequences for telepathic attempts.
At Raiford State Prison Florida guards opened fire with shotguns and rifles as about 100 inmates stormed a fence in a hunger strike protest causing extensive damage and 43 injuries including one man shot in the eye. Prison officials described a chaotic, evolving incident as about 1,200 inmates gathered on an athletic field before the unrest intensified. Meanwhile a separate report notes a stolen 1965 Ford from Monroeville area with keys left in the unlocked vehicle.
Assault and battery charges against George Fetter, Greenwich councilman, were dropped. The charge stemmed from an August demolition derby at the Huron County Fair filed by former village police chief Loren Welsh. Welsh resigned as police chief about 10 days before the formal dropping on January 27.
A hand cut circular Valentine with lattice hearts and a poem is found in an 1874 Bible owned by Mrs. William Geer of Norwalk. The note signed Sandy W. Poe hints at a past romance. writers and origins remain a mystery.
Norwalk faced bitter cold and blowing snow as new storms hit after an eight inch snowfall earlier in the week. Travelers were urged to take care while city salt trucks and four snow plows worked to clear drifting streets as temperatures fell to 18 with gusts to 25 and a minus 13 wind chill.
Ricky L. Maye 19 of Greenwich died when his car failed to stop at a red light at U S 20 and Ohio 58. His 18 month old daughter Shanna escaped injury. Driver Nolan R. Goodrich 27 of Wakeman sustained injuries but did not seek treatment. Maye worked at F E Myers Brothers Pump Co. in Ashland. Funeral plans were pending at Myers Funeral Home in Greenwich.
Livengood deputy county engineer was appointed to complete the five year term on the Huron County Airport Authority after Krogh resigned to become Norwalk service director. The airport near Norwalk on U S 20 is jointly run by city and county through a five member authority. Livengood will serve most of the term since Krogh was reappointed in December.
James Cash Penney failed early when refusing to give bourbon to a key customer. He opened a one room dry goods shop in Kemmerer Wyoming in 1902 naming it the Golden Rule Store. He built it into a 1,700 store chain with 4.1 billion in sales before his death at 95. Funeral at St James Episcopal Church.
