Cairo's government controlled Arabic daily prints a cartoon linking the United States to aggression. The drawing features President Richard Nixon wearing an eyepatch like Moshe Dayan and carries the caption The Real Enemy.
Senator Barry Goldwater of Arizona was released from Grand Canyon Hospital after four days of treatment for fatigue. Dr. Leslie Kober said the 61 year old Republican was admitted after two days of hiking at altitudes above 7000 feet and dry air. Goldwater has long made hiking and boating trips through the canyon.
Democrats will air a one hour program across CBS ABC and NBC to respond to Nixon’s State of the Union. The taped broadcast involves 24 party leaders with segments from Los Angeles Houston Detroit and Washington. Air times are 1 p.m. EST on Sunday on CBS ABC and 12 p.m. in New York and 2:30 p.m. elsewhere on NBC.
Gov. Lester Maddox in Greenville accuses Nixon of shying from his pledge to return school control to local authorities. Abernathy in Atlanta says Nixon failed to speak out on desegregation, fueling South tensions. Also reports Wilshire Heights earth slide endangers homes. Nigerian observers cite 70 Ibo killed in Christmas war actions.
Detroit stockholders approve to merge American Motors with Kaiser Jeep for a total package of 10 million dollars in cash 9.5 million in notes and 5.5 million shares of AMC stock to Kaiser Industries in a large vote 10 695335 to 297242.

A Beirut paper says the Soviet Union has begun a large scale airlift to Egypt in the last 72 hours. The plan includes radar and surface to air missiles around Cairo and antiaircraft batteries, not new MIG fighters. The report cites Antonov transports landing hourly and notes Egyptian jets repelled an Israeli bomber flight toward Cairo.
Miss Donna Pagliaro of Maple Heights described Martin Berns 21 as the calm assailant who entered the Shaker Heights Municipal Building with a cake like package that exploded killing him. Police found booby trap parts and weapons at Berns home as investigators link the psychiatry patient to the attack and to the shooting of Dr Irving Rosen nearby. The building housing police courts and offices was leveled and a body matched Berns' description was found in rubble.
Citizens National Bank reported deposits rose by 1.112 million during 1969 after changing from a cash to an accrual accounting basis. Earnings per share climbed from 4.96 in 1968 to 7.24 in 1969, and Earle H. Lowe announced the Bancardwick plan is gaining momentum. New board members for 1970 include John W. Baltes and others with John E. Wise as chairman.
Testimony continued into the second day in Common Pleas Court for Oscar D. Stewart 38 of New London in the burglary of Jo and Eds Carryout on July 25. Stewart was charged in August and indicted by the grand jury in December as the jury was seated Wednesday.
Norwalk will host a year round Head Start program funded by federal sources. County officials heard plans from William Lewis about site selection with two churches among potential sponsors. A Neighborhood Youth Corps may also roll out county wide to keep low income youths in school with subsidized jobs at non profits.
An 18 year old Shelby youth Harold Risner was booked into Huron County Jail on armed robbery for the City Loan company holdup in Willard on January 12. Risner was arrested at his Shelby home after a warrant was issued by the prosecutor. The manager said several hundred dollars were taken in the holdup, the first robbery of a Willard loan company.
North Fairfield Mayor Charles R. Zeiter defends the Mayor's Court in a letter to State Rep. Ethel Swanbeck and State Senator Robert J. Corts. He argues the court helps locals, reduces need for lawyers, and urges legislators to curb crime and improve fiscal use. Swanbeck criticized Mayor's Courts as costly in Norwalk last Saturday.
Five candidates collected petitions to run for county offices in the May primary. Vetter and Reed are unopposed Republicans for judge and auditor respectively. no Democrats filed for those offices. Incumbent Leak vs Staples Jr in Republican primary for county commissioner. Maurice B Smith unopposed for Democratic nomination. Bellevue and Norwalk residents vote on fluoridation and a 6 mill library bond.
Norwalk must file a new application for its ambulance service as state health guidelines tighten aid rules. Officials from city hall, led by Service Director William V Mount, learn the board will fund 50 percent up to 6750 per vehicle with radio and standard gear, changing earlier estimates and excluding some previously reimbursable items. Mount notes bid prices may still fall and the city may cover more than half the cost.
