NTSB spokesman says search for the Tag airliner wreckage in Lake Erie may take days after the crash 12 miles off Avon Point killing all nine aboard. Radar fixes provide the best markers but are accurate to about 400 feet underwater.
New London Connecticut ceremony names Cmdr Davis W. Cockfield of Toledo Ohio as skipper of the nuclear powered submarine USS Nautilus. Cockfield is a graduate of Columbus West High School and Ohio State University's NROTC, and he earned his Naval Academy degree in 1955 after serving on the Lafayette prior to this assignment.
Gov. James A. Rhodes and former astronaut John H. Glenn Jr. filed nominating petitions to seek the U S Senate seat of retiring Sen. Stephen M Young. Cleveland businessman Howard M Metzenbaum had filed earlier.
Retired Air Force Gen Benjamin O Davis takes over as Cleveland safety director and says he will not carry a firearm, treating gun possession as the responsibility of others. He plans to meet his staff soon to learn their operations while emphasizing dialogue.
Senate hearing opens as Sen. Charles Goodell warns Nixon's Vietnamization may cost 9 000 to 20 000 more American lives even if it works, or fail entirely. He pushes for a one year troop withdrawal bill while noting a potential troop level drop to 300 000 by year end and 250 000 by 1971 with a residual force.
Rutland Vermont students ship 200 genuine Vermont snowballs to Eau Gallie Florida. Each snowball is wrapped in styrofoam and packed with dry ice for a Florida school to send back a bushel of Florida citrus to 200 Rutland first graders.
Lt. William L. Calley Jr. appeared smiling to accept a $1,000 defense donation from the Charles S. Harrison American Legion Post 35 in Columbus. He wore a dark blue suit instead of his uniform as his murder charges in the My Lai massacre case remain unsettled.
United Press International reports a drastic cold wave across the country. International Falls Minnesota recorded 30 below zero at 2 a.m. EST while Florida saw readings around 74 at several spots. Warnings extended from the Mississippi Valley toward the Gulf and up the Appalachians as winds gusted to 60 mph in St. Petersburg and hail lashed Pensacola.

Sam Studebaker of Tipp City Ohio told the National Association of Soil and Water Conservation District that growth could force communities to close doors to expansion. He urged preservation of air water and space and noted rising youth interest in conservation as delegates convened. Studebaker leaves the group after four terms as president amid 2000 delegates at the five day meeting.
Scientist Adolf Knothe reported at an AIAA meeting that debris from Apollo 11 stage 1 nearly struck the Vegesach 375 miles ENE of Cape Kennedy at 9 45 a m EDT July 16. He noted a Teletype on July 17 verified debris sightings and that warned shipping were not issued due to perceived low risk.
Winter weather delays may push back delivery and installation of a $28,740 transformer needed to integrate city and Ohio Edison power systems. Service Director William V Mount said the unit was set for today, rescheduled for tomorrow, and may be postponed again as weather hampers city work on the platform.
The city plans a transformer east of North West Street to tap Ohio Edison power with city standby gear for maintenance outages. Faulty city equipment blamed for recent outages. Ohio Edison quotes 9595 dollars monthly for 3500 kVA or less for one year.
In Chicago UPI report Attorney William Kunstler raged that losing his license or going to jail would be worth it to insist that Ralph Abernathy testify in the Chicago Seven trial. Judge Julius Hoffman then reversed, stating Abernathy could testify if produced in court today, prompting further sharp exchanges.
