Ohioan Cmdr Cockfield Takes Command of Nautilus

New London Connecticut ceremony names Cmdr Davis W. Cockfield of Toledo Ohio as skipper of the nuclear powered submarine USS Nautilus. Cockfield is a graduate of Columbus West High School and Ohio State University's NROTC, and he earned his Naval Academy degree in 1955 after serving on the Lafayette prior to this assignment.

Cold Wave Grips Nation As Arctic Air Drifts South

United Press International reports a drastic cold wave across the country. International Falls Minnesota recorded 30 below zero at 2 a.m. EST while Florida saw readings around 74 at several spots. Warnings extended from the Mississippi Valley toward the Gulf and up the Appalachians as winds gusted to 60 mph in St. Petersburg and hail lashed Pensacola.

Apollo 11 stage debris nearly missed German ship in Atlantic

Scientist Adolf Knothe reported at an AIAA meeting that debris from Apollo 11 stage 1 nearly struck the Vegesach 375 miles ENE of Cape Kennedy at 9 45 a m EDT July 16. He noted a Teletype on July 17 verified debris sightings and that warned shipping were not issued due to perceived low risk.

Winter delays threaten transformer delivery in Norwalk

In Chicago UPI report Attorney William Kunstler raged that losing his license or going to jail would be worth it to insist that Ralph Abernathy testify in the Chicago Seven trial. Judge Julius Hoffman then reversed, stating Abernathy could testify if produced in court today, prompting further sharp exchanges.
