Governors Gather in Cincinnati to Plan Ohio Flood Prep

Ohio Governor James A. Rhodes requests a mid February meeting at Lunken Airport with river state governors or their representatives to map flood control plans for the Ohio River. Ohio offers lowest tax environment in 12-state survey

Ohio shows the lowest personal income tax bite among 12 states in a Cincinnati Chamber survey by Arthur Andersen Co. Ohio residents pay 9 percent of income toward state and local taxes, the lowest rate in the study while New York residents pay the highest at 15.5 percent. The survey covers property, income and sales taxes impacting business and employment.

Blumenthal Sees $50 Tax Rebates by April and Larger Paychecks by May

Treasury Secretary Blumenthal said taxpayers could receive $50 rebates by April and bigger paychecks by May if Congress acts quickly on Carter's stimulus package. He testified to the House Appropriations Committee that the average withholding rate would drop by May 1, marking the first administration estimate of when the standard deduction increase would affect workers.

Snowbound Highways Prompt Closures Across Erie County

Drifting snow kept many area routes closed with Ohio 99 162 61 outside Norwalk and others shut as of early today per Ohio Highway Patrol Norwalk. Erie County except Ohio 60 mostly open per Sandusky patrol, U.S. 250 passable though one lane in places, Ohio 61 closed countywide, Ohio 113 closed near Bellevue per Erie County Sheriff's Office. Turnpike clear with few icy spots and open entire length.

No Setup Seen In Gas Crisis WASHINGTON

Federal experts say reopening closed plants is unlikely and homeowner conservation may mask ongoing shortages. The Eastern states report easing demand from thermostat cuts and factory shutdowns but warn against overconfidence. Cold weather could worsen supply and extend shortages to more pipelines.

Area Schools Shut Down To Conserve Gas In Janury Cold

Battered by record cold in January, area schools temporarily close through Monday to free natural gas for residential heating. Columbia Gas of Ohio asked large users to curb use until Saturday to prevent pipe freezing. Several districts including Norwalk Monroeville Willard Berlin Milan EHOVE Western Reserve Plymouth are shut for the week with Bellevue delaying until mid February. PUCO rejected pooling conserved gas. Monroeville may still use saved gas if needed to protect public welfare.
