The Agriculture Department reports Americans smoked 620 billion cigarettes in 1976, up from 1975 by about 13 billion and from 1970 by 84 billion. Higher incomes and larger adult population drive the rise, with no sign of slowing.
Senator George McGovern criticizes Jimmy Carter’s new cabinet as largely the same group of individuals seen in Nixon and prior administrations. He calls it a sign of business as usual and notes the public rift within the Democratic Party.
Bedford Ohio City Council voted 6-0 to fire Louis V. Corsi, the sixth city manager since 1968, as of December 21 after an executive session. Corsi earns $27,100 annually and has not been briefed. mayor Lawrence Aguier declined comment.
