David and Julie Nixon Eisenhower fly from Los Angeles to Tokyo on a multi nation trip to reach Peking with a planned 11 to 12 day stay in China. A Nixon spokesman and Japan Air Lines confirmed the departure. The trip follows Christmas in San Clemente with the Nixons.
United Press International reports the holiday traffic death toll surpassed 200 at the halfway point of the 102 hour Christmas period. Snow and ice slowed travel Friday but 16 states and the District of Columbia reported no fatalities. The National Safety Council had estimated 440 to 500 deaths by period end.

Residents consider a proposed city ordinance restricting youths under 16 from playing pool or pinball in public venues after midnight. The measure asks whether the public supports such limits to curb late night activity.
A city poll shows 88.1 percent yes and 11.9 percent no on restricting youths under 16 to midnight. Mayor Goodsite said Hogan's Hill may close for sledding if snowball misbehavior continues. Residents complain, urging a vote by calling 668-8544 or 668-8345 before midnight.
China releases three Soviet crewmen captured in Sinkiang on March 14 1974 after stating the helicopter was on an espionage mission. The New China News Agency cites the Soviet crewmen’s account as credible and returns the helicopter and all equipment to Moscow.
A Baku court sentenced five men to death by firing squad and 59 others to prison for a large embezzlement against the Soviet state. The Bakinskiy Rabochiy report says nine million rubles were siphoned from a vegetable cannery and four Caspian fisheries over four years, with officials implicated and no vegetables ever planted.
DEARBORN HEIGHTS Michigan UP I reports a man accused of abandoning eight mixed breed puppies in subfreezing weather behind a supermarket. Two died in a patrol car and another later at the station. Surviving pups receive care and temporary housing as City officials pursue cruelty charges.
President Ford skied with the U S Olympic alpine team in Vail Colorado taking a fall or two but kept moving with Susie Patterson and team officials. Coach Hank Tauber called him an expert recreational skier who could be an alternate. Ford, 62, showed strong conditioning and improved form through the day despite tumbles.
An extradition hearing for Maria Vartorella Richardson, accused of taking her four year old son Donovan to Colorado, is scheduled for Friday. Colorado authorities granted physical custody to Richardson while actual legal custody rests with the Colorado Department of Social Services. The case hinges on the extradition ruling and whether Richardson should be brought to Ohio to face charges. Richard Vartorella, the boy’s father, had limited visitation rights, and the boy was taken in October after Richardson disappeared with him. Elizabeth Vartorella traveled to Colorado to retrieve Donovan but had to return alone after a juvenile court decision.
