Grace Russell recalls two major 1972 disasters in Clarksfield, the Northern Propane Gas Co explosion on Nov. 15 and the Norfolk and Western train wreck near the Vermilion River on Jan. 23. The propane blast destroyed Norgas and injured no one fatally, while the train crash prompted river-area water shutoffs and a culvert project. The era also saw the disbanding of the local Subordinate Grange after 55 years.
