Edward Falk, 43, of Newton New Jersey, in satisfactory progress after receiving a heart and lungs from a 50 year old woman. The donor’s identity was not released. The operation was reported by New York Hospital officials.
A steady rise in traffic deaths today suggested the National Safety Council’s 800 to 920 fatalities estimate for the Christmas period was too high. The council said snow kept many home and cautious travelers off the roads.
UPI reports Henry Loomis of the U S Information Agency urged Soviet officials to stop jamming the Russian language Voice of America, saying continued interference wastes money for both sides. Moscow gave no constructive response and did not acknowledge resuming jamming since August 1968 invasion of Czechoslovakia. Israeli commandos, backed by jets, raided Egyptian positions at Ras Gharib in the Gulf of Suez, killing several soldiers and capturing four, with one Israeli lightly wounded. It marked a third such raid in 10 days as warplanes were involved. In Tokyo, the Liberal Democratic party led early in Japan's Diet election, with 59 of 74 seats reported, as Prime Minister Eisaku Sato's party solidified its lead.

Fourteen people were injured in three separate crashes investigated by the Norwalk Post of the State Highway Patrol. A two car collision on Route 20 east of Norwalk involved Robert E. Hoker and Ruth Hafner, with multiple passengers treated at Fisher-Titus Hospital. A second two car crash on Miner Road near New London injured five, including Denise Robertson and the Williams family, with Cooke and a minor also treated. Miss Cooke required 35 stitches after the head on collision amid narrow, snow cluttered, blind-spot conditions.
UPI reports the Chicago Seven riot conspiracy trial halts for a long weekend after Abbie Hoffman falls ill. Daley’s appearance is postponed to Monday as Nelsons in a Route 20 crash are treated and released at Fisher-Titus Hospital.
Norwalk offers annual mobile home trailer licenses issued by the mayor and service director. Licenses, costing $3, show inspections by the Norwalk Fire Department and Huron County Health Department and must be displayed by January 10 in the window nearest the street beside the county tax stamp.
President Nixon hinted he will sign the tax reform bill despite its $2.5 billion revenue loss for fiscal 1971 while tightening the budget. He met with Budget Director May and Defense Secretary Laird to map a plan to offset the shortfall, aiming to present a final budget to Congress in January and prepare the State of the Union address for January 22.
Norwalk police charged Donald L. Norris with armed robbery for taking 300 dollars from Woolworths manager Mrs. Eugene Shumer while armed with a pistol. Norris, 31, arraigned in Huron County Common Pleas Court with bond set at 10000 cash. A gun found in Gordys Glass may be the weapon used.
Norwalk City Council will hold a special session Tuesday night to approve four appointments and discuss new legislation including end of year reappropriations. Mayor Harold E. Finch will present four nominees to the income tax Board of Review and Park and Recreation Board. A bid advertisement for city property insurance will be introduced.
Vice President Spiro T. Agnew prepared a military briefing in Honolulu before flying to Guam aboard Air Force Two on a 25 day Far East mission. He and wife Judy stayed at Adm. McCain Jr. Makalapa guest house with security kept secret. Agnew to visit Guam Philippines Formosa Thailand Nepal Afghanistan Malaysia Singapore Bali Australia New Zealand. He may visit Vietnam.
