The holiday travel death toll surpassed 250 as icy roads fog and winds hit multiple states. The National Safety Council called the first 24 hours the worst three day Christmas period in history.
Max Conrad, 61, lands at St Petersburg Clearwater after a 7900 mile non stop flight from Cape Town. He planned to reach New Orleans but weather and mechanical troubles forced a stop. He left Cape Town at midnight EST and touched down at 8:49 a.m. EST after just under 59 hours aloft.
African students who burned the U S Information Service library in Cairo on Thanksgiving Day planned to return the next day to kill American and Belgian diplomats, according to African sources. Egyptian authorities learned of the plan and warned they would deport any demonstrators.
A 16 year old Houston thief failed in three car thefts over Christmas Day with the first car running out of gas and a third bursting into flames after a high speed run. He was later turned in by a relative. In Fredericksburg a four year old named Gerald Novian fired a toy machine gun near the President’s Christmas church service. His mother took the gun away and Gerald said he was aiming at a girl.
Occasional rain in the northwest this afternoon gives way to snow flurries as a cold front moves in. Tonight turns windy and much colder with additional snow flurries. Low 12 to 18. Sunday mostly fair but very cold. snow flurries in the extreme northeast. Births list three families welcomed a girl in E Washington, a Monroeville boy, and Wellington twins. Deaths report three residents: Alice Gavin Canton Marshall O. Price 75 New London Matilda A. Boehler 79 Bellevue.
Rain worsens floods in the Northwest as tornadoes strike central Georgia and freezing rain makes Midwest highways dangerous. Rain sweeps the coast of Washington and Oregon while 1000 families near Portland are ordered to evacuate amid continuing flood danger.
The weather bureau reports crested surges on the Columbia and Willamette rivers prompting authorities to order North Portland residents to evacuate as dikes face pressure. Tornadoes touched central Georgia near Macon and 8 miles north, with storms causing damage in Milledgeville and Nashville.
Floods across Oregon and Washington recede after five days of disaster leaving 26 dead and thousands homeless. 1200 residents were ordered to evacuate low lying areas between the Columbia River and Portland as authorities prepared for possible further flooding. The Willamette and Columbia rivers rose to about 29.85 and 27.6 feet respectively, with Portland’s seawall and sandbags protecting downtown amid relief efforts and ongoing rescue challenges.
Persistent fog and rain crippled relief work along the north coast. U S S Bennington and U S S Walton delivered supplies at Eureka while civilian pilots conducted emergency food drops. Grounded military planes paused a Coast Guard helicopter search after a Tuesday crash. Dozens remain stranded without food or shelter in Eel River canyon areas.
A gang armed with iron bars attacked Saigon's national Buddhist center on Christmas night. Monks showed reporters two foot long bars and spoke of a prisoner captured in the brawl, a Chinese-descent captive with a bandaged head. The incident marked the third Buddhist attack in five days as U S officials tighten security to curb Viet Cong terrorism.
Washington reports Uncle Carl Vinson, longtime Georgia Democrat and chair of the Armed Services and Naval Affairs committees, exited Congress on Christmas Day after 50 years in the House. He rode a train to Georgia farm life, offering no tearful farewells and planning to return only for the start of the 88th Congress.
Mrs. Janice Ellen Grine 24 died Christmas morning after a sudden pregnancy complication. Her stillborn twins Daniel and Donna, delivered by Caesarean, also died. Funeral mass set for Monday at St. Pauls Catholic Church with burial in the parish cemetery. Surviving husband Charles D. Grine and two children Denise and Michael. Additional relatives and arrangements noted.
