Top Cynana County Court postponed Leon Riley's trial on dumping rubbish above ground to after Jan. 5 at the request of his attorneys Miller, Miller and Miller. The Huron County Health Department said dumping occurred in Norwalk Township. Riley pleaded not guilty at a Dec. 12 preliminary hearing.
Huron County auditor Bernard Kean announced the 1964 tax rate in Norwalk will be 41.20 mills, 0.70 mills lower than 1963, after the county board approved the abstract and district rates. Duplicates should be ready early next week, with some delays possible where intercounty rates depend on others. Norwalk rate cuts reflect a 0.50 mill reduction for Tuberculosis Fund plus lower school and bond retirement levies. District rates include Milan 31.20, Monroeville 29.20, Norwalk city 36.30, Western Reserve 33.40.

A Coast Guard helicopter went missing after rescuing 16 people. six deaths in Oregon included two electrocutions and four swept away. Stanfield and John Day evacuees overwhelmed down town issues as floodwaters swelled rivers and threatened supplies.
Ten year old Lois Risner won a monthly national Schwinn bicycle contest for helping others by reading stories and singing to elderly nursing home patients. Her brother, soon to be in the Army overseas, asked she might receive a bicycle for Christmas.
Lois Risner, a Pleasant Street School fourth grader, has given a lavender and white bicycle to Gaumont Nursing Home residents. Her mother, Mrs. Orvil Risner, says Lois has done this several times and enjoys helping others despite poor eyesight.
A powerful earthquake rattled from Los Angeles to the Mexican border injuring no one but causing widespread fear and property damage. In San Diego, chandeliers swayed in a downtown bank and a hotel occupant stepped onto a ledge before returning inside. The quake centered about 250 miles south of Pasadena near Baja California, with intensity below the 1933 and 1952 Southern California quakes.
A suspected counterfeiter, Robert Bennett aged 29, escaped from a guarded outbuilding early today at a hospital area in Painesville. He fled with a pistol taken from Deputy Sheriff Harold Williams during a raid on his home Tuesday. Police set roadblocks and deployed officers to locate the dangerous suspect.
